Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End fell short of expectations when it opened in the US last Friday. It registered a 3-day opening total of $112.5M, excluding the $14M sales for the advanced screenings last Thursday.
I think it's justifiable considering two giant hits opened in the last three weeks, Spider-Man 3 and Shrek the Third. As a result, At World's End failed to surpass Spidey and Shrek's 3-day opening sales.
Over a hundred million opening sales is not bad at all. It's still considered a box-office figure, the 5th biggest 3-day opening overall. I'm pretty much sure it's going to surpass the worldwide gross of both Spider-Man 3 and Shrek 3 because it's the latest one, and most likely to stay longer in theaters. The two previous hits had already lost its momentum and stayed for a very short time in theaters, with the opening of Pirates 3.
Take the case of Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, which only had an opening weekend sales of $72M but it went on to become the 2nd all-time highest grossing film in Hollywood.
The only shortback is that, it failed to match Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest's performance as far as the 3-day opening weekend is concerned. Dead Man's Chest had a 3-day opening of $135.6 (2nd highest, next to Spider-Man 3's $151.1) and
also the 3rd highest grossing film of all time, hitting the billion dollar mark.
Here's US Weekend Box Office (May 25-27, 2007)
