Forbes' 100 Most Powerful Women 2008

Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has been named one of the most powerful women in the world for 2008 by Forbes Magazine.

PGMA is ranked #41, ahead of US First Lady Laura Bush (#44), Queen Elizabeth II (#58), ABC's Barbara Walters (#63) and Diane Sawyer (#65), Liberian President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf (#66) and Queen Rania Al-Abdullah of Jordan (#96).

It's actually the lady president's third time in the list, the first time being was in 2004 when she was at #9 and the second time in 2006 when she was ranked #46.

To quote from Forbes, here's how they describe President Arroyo:

The scandal-tainted president's popularity fell to a record low in June over escalating food and energy prices; Arroyo soon announced a deal with oil companies to trim diesel prices. A recent imbroglio: Arroyo's husband is among those accused of accepting bribes in a $330 million deal with a Chinese telecom firm. Despite rumors of another ouster campaign in the works, Arroyo has survived three impeachment attempts and three coup plots since taking office in 2001 and is sure to fight back.

Remembering Mark Priestley

Australian actor Mark Priestley, 32, was found dead at the 10th floor ledge of a building in Sydney, Australia Wednesday afternoon.

According to the police investigation, Priestley leaped from the 23rd floor of Swissotel, a luxury hotel in Sydney.

Reports say that two weeks before his death, Priestley broke up with his longtime girlfriend Kate Mulvany.

It was a sad news most especially to Aussie televiewers because Priestley is currently being seen as Dan Goldman in Channel 7's medical drama All Saints.

Priestley still has pre-taped episodes for All Saints.

Other than All Saints, Priestley's memorable shows include The Secret Life of Us, Changi, The Farm, Water Rats and Marriage Acts.

Priestley was a native of Perth, Australia and incidentally, Heath Ledger who was found dead in an apartment in New York due to accidental drug overdose was also born in Perth.

    ***

On Philippine showbiz: Comedienne and UST alumna Zorayda Sanchez died of breast cancer also last Wednesday. She was 58.

Alizon Andres is now Jubail Andres

Just like Jon Mullaly who changed his screen name to Jon Avila during his launch as member of Star Magic Batch 15, Alizon Andres is also making the same move by opting to use Jubail Andres instead as his new name.

Jubail is one of the members of Star Magic Batch 16 along with Reb Sibal, Guji Lorenzana, Cheska Ortega, Kristel Moreno, Justin Gonzalez, Enrique Gil, Lance Christopher, Nico Ibaviosa, David Nagtalon, Kaye Garcia, Chase Rivera and many more who were launched at ASAP '08 a week ago.

An indemand model, he has been an endorser of Sky Flakes, Sketchers, Pepsi, Page Jeans, Smart, Alaxan and a lot more.

He also joined the Century Tuna Superbods 2007 search and won as Texters' Choice, but he lost the title to Ram Sagad.

Prior to that, Jubail was a contestant at Eat Bulaga's Mr. Pogi 2005 contest.

Take a look at Jubail's photos from the web:

Bitoy's face on Reader's Digest cover

Filipino comediant and host Michael V., in one of his funny impersonations, is in the cover of international publication Reader's Digest for the month of September, 2008.

On the said issue, Michael V is tagged with the line "Yari Ka!" which is an obvious reference to his top-rating show Bitoy's Funniest Videos: Yari Ka! on GMA 7.

It is indeed a great privilege for Bitoy to be the cover choice for the month, especially that it is in celebration for the mag's 5th Annual Humor Special.

Also featured on the September 2008 issue are Asian comedians Mark Lee of Singapore and Harith Iskander from Malaysia.

This only proves that Michael V., who is a three-time Asian TV Awardee for Best Comedy Actor, is one of the best comedians in Asia today.

GMA issues statement on Marian-Dingdong's show

Thru Pia Guanio on Showbiz Central yesterday, GMA 7 has reiterated that for the record, August 27, 2008 was the only available date for a show in Araneta Coliseum when they booked for the birthday party of Marian Rivera and Dingdong Dantes.

The statement is in relation to the accusation that GMA 7 has intentionally pitted Let's Celebrate, The Dingdong-Marian Birthday Blowout against the opening day of Star Cinema's For The First Time, which stars KC Concepcion and GMA's Telebabad King Richard Gutierrez.

On Abante Online, Dingdong has also expressed his side regarding this matter:

“Unang-una, sigurado ako na walang pananabotaheng naganap. Hindi namin sinasabotahe sina Richard at KC.

“Nagkataon na ‘yung availability ng Araneta Coliseum is on August 27 lang din at sa pagkakaalam ko, matagal na raw na nai-book `yung show namin.

“And with the movie, kaibigan namin ‘yung mga nandoon. Kami ni Richard matagal ko nang sinasabi na kaming dalawa, wala kaming problema. Magkakasama kami sa isang network and we’re all friends. Then, si Direk Joyce Bernal who is the director of the movie is our friend also, being the director of Dyesebel.

“So, wala talaga. Besides, maliit lang ang industriya natin. Sobrang maliit lang ang chances na magkaroon ng ganitong event kaya sana, suportahan na lang with each other at magpasalamat sa lahat ng magagandang opportunity na dumarating sa ating lahat."

Meanwhile, Sharon Cuneta and Annabelle Rama, mothers of KC and Richard, expressed their disappointment about the same playdate:

As quoted from the show SHARON:

Annabelle: Pero ngayon kasi, parang imposible namang Wednesday, Araneta, Wednesday? ‘Tapos ano ba yun, the same date, e, tapos na yung birthday nung dalawa. Bakit hindi na lang sa 12, 13, 14, 15, 16? Bakit kailangang 27?

Sharon: To be fair and honest, masama ang loob ko, nagalit ako nung unang dinig. But I always know the truth is somewhere in the middle, e. I learned that from Kiko, e. So parang, siguro meron talagang nag-isip na manadya, kaya yung masakit.

Gabby plus KC minus Sharon on ASAP '08

For the first time on Philippine television, KC Concepcion had the chance to perform a duet with her real life dad Gabby Concepcion on ASAP '08, Sunday, August 24, 2008.

As what Ruffa Gutierrez calls it a "virtual duet", the father and daughter number happened with KC singing live on ASAP while Gabby performing on a pre-taped video.

It was indeed a delight for the fans, but many are wondering why the two could not have a live duet, when they are both in the country.

As one fan puts it, KC's mom has something to do with why KC and Gabby have not appeared yet together on TV.

Or maybe, it's something to look forward to, when KC and Gabby will get the chance to do a movie together someday and that's the time when the two of tem will guest live to promote the movie.

KC was with Richard Gutierrez to promote their movie For The First Time under Star Cinema.

The premiere night will be held tomorrow, August 26, at SM Megamall Cinema 10.

Rumor has it that Sharon won't be coming to the premiere night, because Gabby is believed to be attending the event.

On Sharon's show last night, the Megastar was heard talking about the uncertainty of going to the preview.

Sharon was quoted saying, "Depende sa anak ko... Loyal ka naman sa 'kin anak, di ba?"

Richard and Angel, together again

After the TVC for Head & Shoulders, Richard Gutierrez and Angel Locsin have reunited once more, not on GMA 7, but this time on ABS-CBN.

Angel, who transferred to the Kapamilya Network over a year ago, gamely welcomed her former loveteam partner Richard Gutierrez on ASAP '08 yesterday when the latter dropped by to promote his Star Cinema movie For The First Time.

On two parts of the show, Angel was with Richard, even if Richard has already a new loveteam in the person of KC Concepcion.

Aside from Angel, other Kapamilya leading ladies have also welcomed Richard in the show and they were Melissa Ricks, Kim Chiu, Maja Salvador, Shaina Magdayao, Roxanne Guinoo, Nikki Gil, Toni Gonzaga, Iya Villania, Sarah Geronimo and Chard's ex-girlfriend Anne Curtis.

Apart from that, Angel has also lent her support for the movie via a TV ad, which has been airing on ABS-CBN for over a week already.

ABS-CBN celebrates weekends with GMA's Richard Gutierrez

Just like the time when Gabby Concepcion and Charlie Green arrived in the Philippines, ABS-CBN 2 has dedicated its last weekends with GMA 7's premiere talent Richard Gutierrez in time for the promotion of his Star Cinema movie with KC Concepcion.

Chard, as what showbizlandia calls him, has invaded ABS-CBN last Saturday and Sunday, appearing in a total of 5 shows, 4 of which were live appearances.

For the first time, Chard appeared live on an ABS-CBN show via Wowowee last Saturday, August 23, 2008.

Right after the show, Chard then proceeded to Entertainment! Live to be interviewed live by Toni Gonzaga, who happens to be a former Kapuso.

On August 24, 2008, Sunday, Richard guested on ASAP '08, then on The Buzz and later that night, on a pre-taped episode of Sharon.

It's a good thing Richard Gutierrez is no longer part of GMA 7's SOP, or else, he might have been prevented from appearing on its rival show.

Of course, KC Concepcion was with Richard all throughout his guestings to promote their movie For The First Time, which opens in theaters on Wednesday, August 27, 2008.

Annabelle Rama, Chard's mother and manager, was all praises to ABS-CBN and was very grateful to the network for the warm welcome given to Richard.

ABS-CBN even gave Richard the title of "The Perfect Leading Man", which is a big OUCH!!! to Kapamilya leading men Piolo Pascual, Sam Milby and John Lloyd Cruz.

36 things to know about the Beijing Olympics medal count

The United States of America has won 36 gold medals in the recently concluded 29th Summer Olympics in Beijing, China.

The country has equalled its medals won during the 2004 Athens Olympics when it was the over-all champion, but this year, it is only behind China, which hauled in an amazing total of 51 gold medals.

Yahoo! Sports has come up with 36 Facts about the Olympic medal count in honor of the thirty-six (36) gold medals won by US in Beijing.

Included in the facts presented are the 1st-time Olympic winners such as Afghanistan, Bahrain, Mauritius, Sudan, Tajikistan and Togo.

    1) China won the most gold medals at the Beijing Games with 51. They become the first country to crack the 50-gold mark since the Soviet Union in 1988. The most golds ever won in a single Olympics is 83 (United States, 1984).

    2) It's the first time since 1936 that a country other than the United States or the Soviet Union has led the medal count.

    3) China won more golds in Beijing (51) than they did total medals in Atlanta (50).

    4) 'Project 119' was a Chinese initiative designed toward winning golds in the medal-rich sports of swimming, track, rowing, kayaking and sailing. Reports are already crediting Project 119 with China's dominance in the gold medal count, but Chinese athletes won just four golds in those sports. Their total was instead augmented by even better performances in Chinese-dominated events like diving, gymnastics and table tennis.

    5) The United States won the same amount of golds (36) that they did in Athens, continuing a remarkable consistency that the nation has exhibited over the past half-century. American Olympic gold totals since 1952: 40, 32, 34, 36, 45, 33, 34, 83, 36, 37, 44, 38, 36 and 36. (The outlier of 83 was from the boycotted 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.)

    6) The overall medal count was won by the United States for the fourth consecutive Olympics. The U.S. earned 110 medals, compared to China's 100.

    7) Per capita, China won one gold medal for every 25 million people in the country. The United States' per capita rate was one gold for every 8.5 million. The tiny island nation of Jamaica, which won a staggering six golds in Beijing, had a per capita rate of one gold for every 450,000 residents. Had China won at that rate, the country would have earned 2,889 golds.

    8) Greece won 16 medals as the host country in 2004. Four years later, the founders of the Olympics managed just four -- their lowest total since 1992.

    9) African countries won a total of 40 medals, the highest total in history for the continent.

    10) Six countries won their first ever Olympic medals: Afghanistan, Bahrain, Mauritius, Sudan, Tajikistan and Togo.

    11) Great Britain won 47 medals, the most in their history and a 17-medal increase from Athens. Expect an even higher total in 2012, when the Games will be held in London for the first time in 68 years. The last time Great Britain competed in a Summer Olympics on its home turf, they earned a disappointing three golds.

    12) India has 17% of the world's population. They won 0.31% of Olympic medals.

    13) China: 19.8% of population, 10.4% of medals.

    14) United States: 4.6% of population, 11.5% medals.

    15) Jamaica: 0.041% of population, 1.15% medals.

    16) Iceland was the least populous country to win an Olympic medal.

    17) Pakistan was the most populous country not to win an Olympic medal (164 million residents, sixth-largest nation in the world).

    18) Michael Phelps would have finished tied for 9th in the gold medal count, ahead of countries including France, Netherlands, Spain, Canada, Argentina, Switzerland, Brazil and Mexico.

    19) The rest of the world won seven golds in men's swimming events. Phelps, of course, won eight.

    20) The United States won the most golds (7) and most total medals in the track competition (23), despite having what was widely considered a disappointing meet

    21) More proof that boxing is dead in the United States: the country earned just one medal (a bronze) in the 12 boxing events. Even after three straight disappointing boxing performances at the Summer Games, the U.S. has still won the most Olympic boxing medals (109) in history.

    22) China won 8 out of 12 possible medals in table tennis and 7 of 8 possible golds in diving.

    23) Great Britain won 7 of 10 golds in track cycling and won 12 medals overall. The rest of the world earned 18 medals in the sport.

    24) National gold-medal sweeps: Basketball (USA), Beach Volleyball (USA), Rhythmic Gymnastics (RUS), Synchronized Swimming (RUS), Table Tennis (CHN) and Trampoline (CHN).

    25) Sweden had the best medal tally (4 silver, 1 bronze) without winning a gold.

    26) Armenia won 6 bronze medals, but no gold or silver ones.

    27) Speaking of former Soviet states, members of the former Soviet Union won a total of 173 medals in Beijing.

    28) In 1992, Cuba finished 5th in the gold medal count. In 2008, the nation finished 28th.

    29) From 1980 to 2008, Jamaica won three Olympic golds. In a span of six days in Beijing, Usain Bolt won three.

    30) Sweden was a fixture in the top-three of the overall medal count for the early part of the 20th century. In Beijing, the Scandinavian country finished 38th and was shut-out in golds for just the second time in history.

    31) Panama and Mongolia won the first gold medals in their respective histories.

    32) China won 27 gold medals in judged sports.

    33) The United States won 4 gold medals in judged sports.

    34) China's "real" medal tally was 24/17/14/55.

    35) The "real" medal tally for the United States: 32/31/27/80.

    36) In all, 958 medals were handed out to athletes from 87 countries, the most medals and medal receipients in Olympic history.
