August 05, 2007. An 8-year old Israeli boy by the name of Shneur Zalman Friedman was missing for 6 hours in the Dead Sea after his father and two brothers accidentally left him while they were taking a bath. Rescuers could not believe that they would find the boy alive. The boy said he was just calm, saying prayers and thinking about his friends in schools all throughout the 6 hours of floating in the Dead Sea. More about this story here. August 06, 2007. Matthew Savage, 17 of Gainesville, GA, miraculously survived after falling 6 stories from a hotel balcony. You might think he has broken bones and is paralyzed, but you're wrong. 'Telenovela' is now an English word

It's now official that the Spanish word "telenovela" has been included as one of the 100 new words in the latest update of Merriam-Webster's Collegiate® Dictionary, Eleventh Edition to be released soon.

The word telenovela, combined term for "tele" and "novela," is very popular in Latin America and among Spanish-speaking countries. In the Asian region, I think Philippines is the only country to actively use the word, especially to refer to television series like Korean telenobela (with a b) or Mexican telenobela and even in the phrase "Queen of telenovela."

Also good news for the people of India because "Bollywood" is one of the new words.

Aside from telenovela and Bollywood, here are some of the 100 new words in the said 2007 dictionary:

1. ginormous (coined from the words "gigantic" and "enormous")
2. chaebol (of Korean origin)
3. crunk (a slang word, for hip-hop and rap usage)
4. agnorotti (of Italian origin, to refer to a dish of small pasta)
5. DVR (digital video recorder)
6. flex-cuff
7. viewshed (an area of land, water, and other environmental elements that is
visible from a fixed vantage point)
8. gray literature
9. hardscape
10. IED (improvised explosive device)
11. microgreen
12. nocebo (a medical term)
13. perfect storm
14. RPG (not the Role-Playing Game, but the Report Program Generator)
15. smackdown (a bitter contest, usually to refer to wrestling)
16. snowboardcross
17. speed dating
18. sudoku (a number puzzle)

"Greetings in Christ!

I am writing to you asking for help in
any way you can.

My dad is confined in the intensive care unit of Las Piñas Doctors Hospital. My dad has experienced several strokes and heart attacks before. In addition, he is also afflicted with diabetes.
Because of the medicines he is taking, my dad has suffered ulcer, and has vomited a lot of blood. Unfortunately, since this happened last Sunday, the needed blood for his transfusion did not reach him in time, hence, he suffered another heart attack. The doctors said that he has ongoing heart attack. Taking in mind the fact he is diabetic, he cannot feel the pain in his chest as a result of the heart attacks. Doctors said he needs close monitoring. His heart is also beating fast. They also suggest him to undergo bypass operation. However, our family's poor finances simply cannot cover the cost of the operation and everyday
medical expenses considering the many hospital related costs they have to face.
I am appealing to your generous hearts for whatever financial help you can extend to our family in this time of great need. We believe God will have a way of giving back to you your charity. Please, any amount will do.

jowewot - if you're tired of using the words, jologs and engot, try this one. It can describe a person who is jologs na, engot pa.

ex. Hay naku! Jowewot ka talaga!

wendita - this word was supposed to be used in reference to PBB Housemate Wendy Valdez. But the Filipinos have adopted this to refer to someone who is maldita and to an irritating person.

ex. Wendita ka, tumabi-tabi ka nga dyan!

wendang - this word is getting popular these days, especially to refer also to Wendy Valdez. But prior to Wendy, this word has been used as alternate for lito or gulo.

ex. Nagkawendang-wendang ang buhay ko nang dahil sa 'yo.

bruhilda - can we equate this to Dolly Ann Carvajal? and that is according to Annabelle Rama. This word is another variation for bruha.

ex. Hoy Bruhilda ka day! Tigil-tigilan mo kami. Siraan mong sarili mong baho.

shonga - it's supposed to be a gay word for "cute", but it has become more popular to describe someone who is "tatanga-tanga."

ex. Ang shonga ko talaga! Ininom ko yung pambleach sa ref. Kala ko kasi gatas.

guranger - kinda obvious, it's for the oldies out there. To use the word "gurang" might be offensive, so better try "gurangers."

arouch - correctly pronounced as "araaaaawch", a combination of "aray!" and "ouch!" Thus, it should be full blast when you express it. It's double the pain.

ex. Arouch! Ang sakit. Dahan-dahan lang pls? Maawa ka.

kadirdir - well, get rid of the expression "It's so kadiri talaga!" for you might sound so sosy and me-artey. Better try this one ok??

Grandma and Granddaughter Will Graduate Together On May 12

It's so inspiring to know that a 95-yr old woman is graduating next month at Fort Hays State University in Kansas, US.

The graduation ceremony is on May 12 and Nora Ochs will be the new record holder for the oldest woman to graduate in college, according to Guinness World Records.

The record is currently held by Mozelle Richardson who graduated at University of Oklahoma, with the degree of Journalism at the age of 90 in 2004.

Nora Ochs, who will graduate with a General Studies degree, is a mother of three and a grandma to 28 grandchildren.

And what's more interesting is that her granddaughter Alexandra Ochs, 21, will also graduate with her.

Wow, truly Nora Ochs is an exemplary model most especially to the youth who feel like studies isn't a priority to them. I hope everyone should be more inspired to persevere and never give up to reach out for their dreams.
